Traditional Dream Factory is turning a former poultry factory in Abela, Alentejo into a regenerative village that combines co-living, syntropic agroforestry and ecological restoration. A blockchain-based token system turns guests into co-stewards of the shared land.
Traditional Dream Factory is building a regenerative village on 25 hectares in Abela, Alentejo, Portugal, on the grounds of a poultry processing factory put up in 1972. It started in 2021. The project challenges conventional models of land ownership through shared stewardship, intentional community building and radical transparency.
Governance runs on the $TDF token, a blockchain-based digital access right that turns visitors into co-stewards. One token gives one night of accommodation a year and a vote on development decisions. There are over 280 token holders and more than €1.25 million has been raised. The legal home is the Swiss-registered OASA Association, one of the few European legal structures with formal recognition for decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs). Citizens holding 30 or more tokens get enhanced governance rights, priority booking and extended stays.
The growing is syntropic agroforestry: more than 65 tree species alongside vegetables and cover crops, a food forest that feeds the community while regenerating the soil. Half the land is kept as wild habitat, supporting over 40 bird species, and the project has carried out carbon-validated reforestation. A mushroom farm supplies three local restaurants and produces medicinal products.
So far there are 14 glamping units, volunteer accommodation and a natural swimming pool that is nearly finished. The 2026 build-out phase will add 12 en-suite co-living rooms, artist studios, a 30-seat farm-to-table restaurant and expanded wellness facilities, including a sauna and a yoga space. Further ahead, a co-housing development of 23 homes in a range of typologies is planned for permanent residents.
TDF draws land stewards, healers, creatives, systems thinkers, remote workers and families looking for meaningful community. The best way in is a two-week volunteer stay, long enough to get to know the land, meet the community and look into the longer-term ways of taking part.
