Vinha Velha is a diverse, family-run organic farm situated near Barão de São João, Lagos, in the Algarve region of Portugal. Founded in the early 1980s by brothers Hubert and Michael, the farm spans 140 hectares and was developed with a vision of self-sufficiency and rich biodiversity. Hubert, trained in agronomic engineering, dedicated his life to building a farm ecosystem from the ground up — planting around 80,000 trees to combat soil erosion and foster a diverse flora and fauna, and constructing lakes to retain water for vegetable gardens and livestock.
The farm operates on a closed-circle farming model: vegetables are cultivated year-round, and animals are raised following biodynamic principles. The land is managed regeneratively, aiming to restore and maintain ecological balance. A wind park co-founded by Hubert continues to supply green energy to the farm today.
Beyond agriculture, Vinha Velha has a rich cultural and social history. Hubert's partner Margit co-founded the first Waldorf school in Portugal, the 'Escola Primavera', in 1988, and later the 'Jardim Internacional Infância Viva', becoming a prominent figure in Portugal's anthroposophical community.
Following Hubert's passing in 2017, the farm transitioned to the second generation, now led by daughters Clara and Delia, along with Delia's partner Florian and their mother Margit. Today, around 20 people from diverse backgrounds live and work on the farm, united by principles of solidarity, sustainability, and environmental responsibility — a mix of permanent employees, volunteers, and participants in independent on-site projects.
The farm offers a range of accommodation options, including tiny houses, traditional casas, and shared spaces such as a yoga room and an outdoor kitchen. Visitors can engage in farm life, participate in activities, and connect with nature in this unique intentional community setting in the Algarve.
Our Goal
Vinha Velha aims to run a regenerative, self-sufficient farm without synthetic inputs, promoting biodiversity, sustainable land management and community living in the Algarve.
Our Wishes
Vinha Velha welcomes volunteers, long-term residents, and visitors who share a commitment to sustainable and regenerative living practices.
