Azeitão Eco-consciente

Azeitão Eco-consciente is a volunteer-driven community initiative based in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, Portugal, dedicated to building a more sustainable, active and connected local culture. The group grew out of the international 'Fancy Women Bike Ride' movement, now continued locally as 'Fancy Azeitão', an annual celebration of women cycling that advocates for safe, everyday use of bicycles and promotes soft, active mobility as a path toward healthier urban living. Beyond cycling, the collective organises and supports a wide range of community activities: biodiversity walks in local natural areas like Choilo, participation in the traditional 'Festa do Manel da Horta' with a community sharing table, and educational talks on topics such as wild edible plants. A key emerging project is a community gardening club, conceived as a space for shared learning around growing food, composting, seed saving, and building food resilience and sovereignty at the family and community level. The group frames home gardening as a tool for healthier eating, reducing food waste, encouraging short supply chains, ecological regeneration, and strengthening intergenerational social bonds and wellbeing. All initiatives are run by local volunteers in close collaboration with the Junta de Freguesia de Azeitão and the Câmara Municipal de Setúbal, reflecting a strong ethos of community co-creation. The organisation communicates primarily through Facebook and Instagram, and events are open to public participation without registration, reflecting an inclusive, low-barrier approach to community engagement and sustainable lifestyle promotion in the Arrábida region, recently recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
