Cabaz da Grela

Cabaz da Grela is a family-run agroecology project based at Quinta da Grela, near Pessegueiro do Vouga, in the Sever do Vouga municipality. The project grows organic, seasonal vegetables and fruit without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, following certified biological farming standards (PTBIO-05). All stages of the process, from cultivation to sale, are carried out by the family with strong respect for environmental sustainability and the local economy, connecting producer directly to consumer. The produce is sold in the form of weekly baskets ('cabazes'), delivered to homes and to distribution points across the Aveiro and Porto regions. Beyond the basket subscription model, the farm hosts open days and educational workshops — including sessions on medicinal plants — welcoming visitors who want to learn about organic farming practices, food sovereignty, and seasonal eating. The project actively promotes awareness around eating fruits and vegetables in their proper season, sharing educational content about organic and biological agriculture through social media. Cabaz da Grela has also participated in cultural and community events such as the Connection Festival and the Pão de Portugal Festival, reflecting its connection to the broader sustainable food movement in the region. Rooted in a philosophy of direct, transparent trade and minimal environmental impact, the initiative represents a small-scale, community-oriented model of organic agriculture in the Sever do Vouga area, combining farming, education, and local economic support.
