Electrão is Portugal's premier waste management compliance organisation, established in April 2005 under the WEEE Directive. It is the only entity in Portugal managing recycling systems for three distinct waste streams — electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and accumulators, and packaging — while also participating in end-of-life management for single-use plastics through urban cleaning systems.
With two decades of operational excellence, Electrão operates the country's most extensive collection network for batteries and used electrical equipment, maintaining over 1,000 collection points nationwide and serving approximately 1,000 member companies. In 2023 alone, the organisation processed over 10,100 tons of waste, reflecting its significant contribution to advancing recycling practices across Portugal.
Electrão's approach spans the entire product lifecycle: from promoting sustainable product design through ecodesign principles and the incorporation of recycled materials, to managing distribution through its innovative Ondedoar.pt platform, where member companies can donate stock surpluses to prevent unnecessary waste. The organisation actively promotes sustainable consumer behaviour through targeted awareness campaigns and strategic partnerships focused on waste reduction and reuse.
Recycling operations are carried out through a robust network of operational partners, including specialised transport operators, reception centres, and advanced treatment facilities, ensuring the safe removal of hazardous components while recovering valuable secondary raw materials. Electrão's integrated management system provides comprehensive support for Extended Producer Responsibility legal requirements, while developing impactful communication projects and campaigns to promote circularity across the entire value chain — making it an essential driver of Portugal's circular economy transition.
