Nave Mãe is a bulk grocery store and ethical catering project in Portalegre that promotes conscious, local and seasonal consumption with a zero-waste approach. It also runs learning workshops and community events around sustainable food practices.

Nave Mãe is a community-rooted project based in Portalegre, in Portugal's interior, dedicated to encouraging more conscious and sustainable ways of consuming. At its heart is a bulk grocery store offering organic and local products with minimal packaging, alongside a catering service, Cozinha Ética, which prepares meals for large group events following principles of proximity to producers, seasonality, preferably organic ingredients, zero waste, health and celebration through shared meals. The project also organises learning workshops — such as fermentation and kombucha-making sessions — and cultural events, including outdoor film screenings, that invite the community to reflect on regeneration, rural resilience and local economies. Nave Mãe began not as a shop but as a catering venture, growing out of the founder's search for the best ingredients and her connections with farmers, millers, beekeepers and fermenters in the region. Over time this network of local suppliers evolved into the bulk grocery store that anchors the project today. It describes itself as a project built by women and artisans, driven by a genuine wish to respond to a real community need rather than a predefined business plan. The team includes people with backgrounds in sociology, social work, communication design, permaculture and traditional cooking, each contributing skills from social media management to bread-making, catering and hospitality. Nave Mãe positions itself as more than a store — a meeting point where community, culture and sustainable food practices intersect, despite the bureaucratic and financial challenges of building such initiatives in Portugal's interior.
