Olive Dogma is a sustainable initiative based in Ourém, Portugal, that emerged from a straightforward but impactful idea: instead of burning the branches left over from olive tree pruning — a common practice that generates unnecessary carbon emissions — why not give them a new life? The answer came in the form of natural olive-wood chew sticks for dogs, crafted from the pruning offcuts of the farm's olive trees and soaked in olive oil. The project addresses multiple sustainability challenges at once. By repurposing agricultural by-products that would otherwise be burned, Olive Dogma reduces carbon emissions and closes the waste loop on the farm. The use of olive oil — a natural, local product — as the sole treatment for the wood keeps the chew sticks entirely natural and free from synthetic additives, making them safe and appealing for dogs. Olive Dogma also champions local production: currently, no equivalent product is manufactured in Portugal, meaning all similar items on the market are imported. By producing domestically, the project eliminates import-related emissions and supports the local rural economy in the Ourém region. The initiative aligns closely with the principles of circular economy and zero-waste living, demonstrating how traditional olive farming can generate value beyond olive oil itself. It serves as an inspiring example of how small farms can innovate within their existing resources, turning agricultural residues into marketable, eco-friendly products.
