Slow Water Earth is a water retention and landscape restoration project working across Portugal, Spain, and Southern Europe. Responding to the growing pressures of desertification, water scarcity, wildfires, soil erosion, and floods in Mediterranean regions, the project designs systems for rainwater harvesting, storage, and reuse — keeping water close to where it falls rather than letting it run off or evaporate.
Their work spans three core phases: careful design and planning tailored to each landscape's challenges; coordinated implementation using proven techniques in water retention, soil restoration, and landscape design (managing contractors, timelines, budgets and quality control); and long-term ecosystem establishment, guiding vegetation growth, monitoring soil hydration, and providing ongoing maintenance as the land regenerates.
Slow Water Earth serves a diverse range of clients: private landowners and homesteaders seeking to protect their homes from wildfire, drought and floods while creating lush, self-sustaining environments with fruit trees and natural swimming ponds; organic and regenerative farmers looking to reduce irrigation costs, improve soil health and build climate-resilient, economically sustainable operations; and eco-restoration and reforestation projects that need water retained in the land before trees are planted, to dramatically improve seedling survival rates and accelerate ecosystem regeneration.
Among their techniques are beaver dam analogues, ponds, terraces, and green belts that act as living firebreaks — slowing fire, holding moisture, and supporting biodiversity even after wildfire events. Their guiding philosophy is that when water stays in the land, abundance follows: hydrated landscapes are resilient landscapes, forming the foundation for thriving communities and a regenerative future.
