Holistic grazing in Portugal
The montado (cork and holm oak over grazed pasture) is already a grazing system, and in places a degraded one, thinned by overstocking and by pigs and cattle kept in the same field year after year. Holistic grazing is the attempt to run it as the herd would.
Herdade do Freixo do Meio manages animals inside its Alentejo montado on that basis. Herdade Monte Silveira works several hundred hectares in the Beira Baixa, Terramay grazes beside the Alqueva, and Monte da Vaquinha runs cattle near Moura. Orgo advises farmers making the switch.
